Exposición Colectiva de PERPETUARTE, 3 de febrero de 2012 a las 20.00 hrs/ The PERPETUARTE exhibition opens on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 8pm

La exposición benéfica de la que les hablé en mi anterior artículo, organizada por PERPETUARTE, y en la que colabora el Ayuntamiento de Yaiza, se inaugurará el viernes, 3 de febrero de 2012 y tendrá lugar en LA CASA DE LA CULTURA BENITO PÉREZ ARMAS DE YAIZA, Lanzarote. Participarán en esta exposición varios artistas residentes en la isla de Lanzarote, entre los cuales que me encuentro yo, con el fin de recaudar fondos para el área de oncología del Hospital José Molina Orosa de Lanzarote. Se podrá visitar la exposición hasta el viernes, 2 de marzo de 2012. En la ceremonia de clausura se procederá a subastar las obras expuestas, que han sido donadas por los artistas participantes, entre ellas, una obra de CÉSAR MANRIQUE, donada por la Fundación Manrique.

The charity exhibition that I wrote about in my previous article, organized by PERPETUARTE in collaboration with the Yaiza Town Hall, will open on Friday, February 3, 2012, and it will take place at the CASA DE LA CULTURA BENITO PEREZ ARMAS in Yaiza, Lanzarote. Several artists who live on the island of Lanzarote, including myself, are participating in this exhibition in order to raise funds for the Oncology department at Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote. The exhibit may be visited until Friday, March 2, 2012, when the closing ceremony will take place and during which the paintings donated by the participating artists will be auctioned, amongst which there is a piece by CESAR MANRIQUE, donated by the Fundacion Manrique.

PerpetuARTE - Una asociación de arte con una bella filosofía/ An art asociation with a beautiful Philosophy

Recientemente he tenido el privilegio de unirme a esta asociación para participar en su próximo proyecto. Su presidenta, Mercedes Crespo, define así a PerpetuARTE:
"Tanto en su concepción original, como en su filosofía y razón de ser, PERPETUARTE aspira a ser el desencadenante de un “proceso creativo” similar (al big bang) que permita, a través de las múltiples formas de expresión que el ARTE ofrece, la canalización de inquietudes, talento, iniciativas y recursos hacia un compromiso con la vida y con el bienestar de la sociedad lanzaroteña. Nuestra finalidad podría sintetizarse así:
“A través del ARTE y de la CULTURA,
perpetuar la lucha por la VIDA y por la CALIDAD DE VIDA”.
Entendemos que ARTE Y CULTURA forman parte intrínseca y esencial del ser humano (creador y destinatario de los mismos) y dignifican su existencia."

Esta asociación pretende, además de potenciar e incentivar el interés por el arte y la cultura, contribuir a mejorar la calidad de vida, utilizando su potencial para generar recursos financieros que puedan aplicarse a la resolución de problemáticas sociales específicas. En estos momentos, Perpetuarte está organizando una exposición colectiva en la cual los artistas que participamos donaremos una obra que será subastada para recaudar fondos para ayudar en la investigación sobre el cáncer y la atención al enfermo (y muy especialmente, al enfermo terminal). En esta ocasión en particular, el objetivo a corto plazo es dotar al departamento de oncología del Hospìtal Dr. José Molina de Orosa de Arrecife, de un psicooncólogo que colabore en la atención a las necesidades de los pacientes oncológicos y sus familias, así como de todo el personal sanitario que los atiende.

Estoy muy ilusionada con este proyecto y proximamente publicaré más información sobre él. Les invito desde aqui a meditar sobre lo que cada uno de nosotros puede hacer por mejorar la calidad de vida del ser humano. Todos podemos poner nuestro granito de arena de alguna manera. Sólo necesitamos un poco de imaginación y buena voluntad.

I have recently had the privilege of being invited to form part of and participate in this association's next project. Its president, Mercedes Crespo, defines PerpetuARTE in the following way:
"In its original conception as well as its philosophy and reason for existing, PerpetuARTE aspires to be the trigger of a creative process (similar to the big bang) that allows, through the multiple forms of expression that ART has to offer, the channeling of concerns, talent, iniciatives and resources, towards a commitment with life and the well being of the people of Lanzarote. Our mission could be summarized as follows: to perpetuate the fight for LIFE and for the QUALITY of LIFE through ART and CULTURE. ART and CULTURE can dignify the existence of life and can be considered an intrinsic part of human nature, as "man" is both recipient and creator of the same."

This association, besides strengthening and encouraging an interest for art and culture, intends to contribute to improving the quality of life by using their potential to generate financial resources in order to solve specific social issues. At the moment, PerpetuArte is organizing a collective exhibition in which the participating artists, amongst which I count myself, will donate a painting that will be auctioned in order to raise funds to provide a psychotherapist for the Dr. José Molina de Orosa Hospital in Arrecife, specializing in the specific needs of cancer patients and those of the human environment that surrounds them: family, caregivers, medical staff, health workers and palliative care teams.

I am very excited with this project and will update information about it shortly. In the meantime, I'd like to invite you to meditate about what each and every one of us can do to help the quality of life of mankind. We can all pitch in somehow. All we need is a little imagination and good will.

Reflecting the Past (Tribute to New York)

Reflecting the Past (Tribute to New York) 50 x 70 cm Oil on canvas/óleo sobre lienzo

This painting, which is now on display at the exhibition "Light, Reflection and Color" at Sociedad Democracia in Arrecife until December 11th, 2011, is one that I hold very close to my heart. I have painted the "Reflecting the Absence" project that is now being built on Ground Zero. However, if you look closely you will see that what is reflected on the surface of the skyscrapers is not what is there, but rather, what used to be there: The World Trade Center, and the rubble after September 11, 2001. The buildings in the background are not what you can really see there either. I have shaped all of them, at different heights to resemble the Twin Towers.

My intention here was to offer the city of my childhood a tribute. This is the city where I grew up until I turned 13. Although we moved to Maryland at the age of 13, I still have family in New York and visit whenever I can.

By painting these reflections of the past, I wanted all of us to remember what happened there, as well as seeing the positive aspect of picking ourselves up from disaster. I'm saying "We are still here, stronger than ever, and we will never forget what happened here nor those who lost their lives".
On this 10th anniversary of 9/11, this painting is my tribute to my home town, because, in spite of living somewhere else, and how much I love this land which is my home now, the little girl in me says, " In my heart, I still am, and always will be, a New Yorker."

Este cuadro, que puede verse en la exposición "Luz, Reflejo y Color" en la Sociedad Democracia de Arrecife hasta el 11 de diciembre de 2011, es un cuadro que significa mucho para mi. He pintado el proyecto llamado "Reflejando la Ausencia", actualmente en constucción en la zona cero. Sin embargo, si miran el cuadro detenidamente, podrán observar que lo que se refleja en la superficie de los rascacielos no es lo que hay a su alrededor, si no lo que había: el World Trade Center, y los escombros después del 11 de septiembre de 2001. Los edificios que aparecen al fondo tampoco son los que verdaderamente están en esa zona. Les he dado una forma parecida a las Torres Gemelas a todos, aunque a diferentes alturas.

Mi intención era ofrecer un tributo a la ciudad de mi infancia. Esta es la ciudad donde me crié hasta los 13 años cuando nos mudamos al estado de Maryland. A pesar de habernos ido a vivir a otro estado, aún tengo familia allí y vuelvo siempre que puedo.

Al pintar estos reflejos del pasado, quiero que todos recordemos lo que ocurrió allí, además de ver el aspecto positivo de volver a levantarnos después del desastre. Estoy diciendo, "Todavía estamos aquí, más fuertes que nunca, y nunca olvidaremos lo que ocurrió aquí, ni a aquellas personas que perdieron sus vidas. En este año en que se ha celebrado el décimo aniversario del 11S, este cuadro es mi tributo a mi ciudad, porque a pesar de vivir en otro lugar, y amar esta tierra que ahora es mi hogar, la niña pequeña que aún llevo dentro, me dice: " En mi corazón, yo aún soy, y siempre seré neoyorquina".

Inauguration of Light, Reflection and Color/ Inauguración de Luz, Reflejo y Color

The exhibition "Light, Reflection and Color" was  successfully inaugurated on Thursday evening. Here are a few pictures of the event.
La exposición "Luz, Reflejo y Color" se inauguró con éxito el jueves por la noche. Aquí podrán ver algunas fotos del evento.

La presentación,en la foto de izquierda a derecha, los tenientes alcaldes de Arrecife,  Nayra Callero y Jose Montelongo, la concejala de Cultura de Arrecife, Eva de Anta, El presidente de la Sociedad Democracia, Ginés Hernández y una servidora, Cristina Efres, durante el acta inaugural.

The painting that seemed to get the most attention and comments, and which sold on that very same night, was "The Grand Hotel at Night".
La obra que despertó más interés y más comentarios, por lo que pude ver, fue "El Gran Hotel de Noche", que se vendió esa misma noche.

The new exhibit opens the day after tomorrow!/ La nueva exposición se inaugura pasado mañana!!

Just a brief reminder: My new exhibit "Light, Reflection and Color" will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, November 10th, 2011 at 8.30 pm. at Sociedad Democracia (Mercantil) in Arrecife, Lanzarote. Nueva exposición/ New Art exhibit

Mi nueva exposición Luz, reflejo y color, se inaugurará el jueves 10 de noviembre a las 20.30 horas en la Sociedad Democracia (Mercantil) en Arrecife de Lanzarote. La muestra permanecerá hasta el 4 de diciembre. El horario de visita será de 10 de la mañana a 10 de la noche.
My new art exhibit, Light, reflection and color, will be inaugurated on Thursday, November 10th at 8:30 pm at Sociedad Democracia (Mercantil) in Arrecife, Lanzarote. The paintings will be on display until December 4th. Opening hours will be from 10 am to 10 pm.
